Fuel for Mountain Biking - One of the least understood parts of mountain biking is the role that eating and drinking correctly plays on your overall success. If you don't eat correctly before a ride, you'll probably suffer premature exhaustion and possibly have trouble making correct decisions on the trail. Here are a few tips:
Carbohydrates
You need carbs for sustained energy. Most rides are 1.5 to 3 hours in duration, and during that time you're expending large amounts of energy. your muscles need the carbs to replace what you'll "burn". For an early evening ride, be sure to eat at least 1000 calories of carbs for a typical 150 lb rider. I'll usually have about 2 cups of brown rice with my lunch to assure adequate carb.
